Sussex County, VA — A tragic commercial vehicle crash on Thursday, July 10, 2025, claimed the life of a 64-year-old tractor-trailer driver traveling through Sussex County.
According to the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred around 1:45 p.m. along the 5200 block of General Mahone Highway (Route 460). A westbound Freightliner tractor-trailer was struck when another commercial truck heading eastbound lost its load cover—a heavy canvas tarp attached to a metal frame.
The tarp became airborne and struck the driver’s side of the Freightliner’s windshield. Authorities say the impact rendered the driver unconscious, causing the vehicle to veer off course. The truck crossed over the eastbound lanes, exited the roadway, and crashed into a nearby wooded area, where it collided with several trees.
The driver, identified as Keith Michael Loback of Roanoke, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene. State police shared images of the truck believed to have lost its load cover. The incident remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced.
A Stark Reminder About Unsecured Truck Loads
Commercial vehicle operators are legally required to secure their cargo and equipment. Incidents involving falling debris or unsecured loads can lead to devastating injuries or fatalities, especially on highways like Route 460, where traffic moves at high speeds.
This heartbreaking crash highlights the dangers posed by unsecured truck equipment—and the serious responsibility commercial drivers and carriers have to protect others on the road.
